One Connection, A Brighter Tomorrow: How Naphtali Transformed Uncertainty into Purpose

Naphtali Ohio Impact

With his high school diploma in hand, the question “what’s next?” weighed heavily on Naphtali.

Like many young adults, he faced a future of possibility but also uncertainty. At the time, he was still in foster care and beginning his transition into Independent Living services, trying to navigate his newfound adulthood without a strong support system.

He wanted to continue his education but wasn’t sure where or how to start. That’s when he was introduced to Amanda, Assistant Director of Education for Foster Success in Ohio. Through Foster Success, Naphtali gained the financial support he needed to continue his educational journey. The funds helped him cover critical expenses like utilities and essential living expenses, which allowed him to focus on school without the pressure of working overtime to make ends meet.

The most meaningful part of his experience hasn’t been financial, it’s been personal.

“I didn’t always know how to maneuver or use my resources or community,” Naphtali said. “Growing up in foster care, I didn’t really have anyone to talk to.”

Amanda changed that. Their relationship initially focused on practical steps: building a plan for Naphtali to qualify for ETV, as he needed to meet the minimum GPA requirement. Amanda walked him through the process of choosing potential majors, applying for financial aid, and setting up strategies for academic success. Together, they broke down manageable goals and celebrated each success, even when he had setbacks. Her consistent presence gave Naphtali a space to be honest about his challenges.

“He was open and honest about previous academic struggles and situations he was in,” Amanda said. “Without a lot of support, he was looking for the village that would be there for him.”

At one point, Naphtali was dealing with legal issues. But Amanda stood by him.

“She’s never judged me. Not once,” he said. “That means the most to me.”

With his commitment and their ongoing conversations, Naphtali became eligible for the ETV program. He chose to pursue a nursing degree at Sinclair Community College, inspired by a desire to help others the way he had been helped. In the spring semester, he met his goal of earning B’s, and discovered an interest in psychology.

Naphtali’s experience with Amanda as his ETV coach reflects what we see across the program. According to our impact data, 96% of young people said their ETV coach had a positive impact on their lives.

In the future, Naphtali looks forward to helping his peers understand the importance of never giving up — a mindset he’s internalized from his time working with Amanda.

ETV has been transformative for Naphtali. His journey has been marked by motivation, enthusiasm, and persistence. The resources he received gave him direction in achieving his educational dreams, and he found someone who took the time to see him, believe in him, and walk alongside him through the ups and downs.

“I’m not saying it because Amanda helped me through school... She has changed my life and given me a new viewpoint for the way that I treat others.”
